| Transfer Station
The transfer station is located on Route 166A, at 315 The Shore Road. Mail or telephone inquiries may be made to the Town Office. The Attendant is Drew Marks.
NOTE: Please make sure that your trash bags do not exceed the 35 lb. weight limit. Please make sure that your recyclables are items that the Town of Castine accepts and make sure that you are separating them, i.e., one bin/bag each for newspaper, tin cans, glass, plastic and cardboard. Monday: Closed (Curb-side Trash pick up)
Tuesday: 8 am to 1pm
Wednesday: 8 am to 1 pm
Thursday: 8 am to 1 pm
Friday: 8 am to 1 pm
Saturday: 8 am to 12 noon
Sunday: Closed
Recycling & Solid Waste Disposal Guide:
Recycle approved materials listed below by placing curbside before 8 am for free pickup on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, or take them to the transfer station for free disposal.
Discard - other solid waste according to instructions at a per-bag or per-item charge. Place stickered bags curbside before 8 a.m. for weekly pickup on Monday, or take stickered bags and other items to transfer station.
Holidays - when a holiday falls on Monday, solid waste and recycle pickup will be on Tuesday.
Note: Transfer Station vehicle decals are available for no charge at the Town Office for residents and taxpayers.
PREPARING FOR RECYCLING DAY
Tin, plastic, glass and newsprint should be put in separate reusable “recycle” bins, which will be left at curbside.
Cardboard can be placed beside or under the “recycle” bin in pieces no larger that 3’ x 3’.
Pickup will be the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of each month, beginning at 8:00 a.m. In case of inclement weather, or if by chance your recyclables do not get picked up, keep them until the following recycling day or bring them to the transfer station.
PAPER (NEWSPRINT)
Newspapers, telephone books and magazines. All material must be dry and clear of foreign objects. Do not include aged yellow newsprint, junk mail, brown paper bags (grocery bags), paperback books, envelopes and office waste.
OFFICE PAPER
Office paper may be taken to bins located at the Town Office (no curb-side pickup). Office paper is made up of mostly white "copy" or letter paper. No glue, tape, staples, paper clips or envelopes.
CORRUGATED CARDBOARD
Dry corrugated cardboard is accepted. All cardboard must be in pieces no larger than 3’x3’. Corrugated cardboard must be completely dry and free of all food and oil contamination. Do not include Box board, which isthin cardlike cracker, pasta and other food product boxes, or milk cartons. Asian Cardboard, such as stamped with “China” or “Taiwan” with a yellow tint is not accepted. Please remove all Styrofoam or other packing material.
PLASTICS
Clear HDPE Only milk and water jugs.
Colored HDPE Laundry detergent and bleach bottles with #2 HDPE mark on the bottom.
All plastic must be clean. The caps and rings must be removed from all bottles and discarded, as they are a different form of plastic. Do not include butter/ yogurt containers, automotive bottles /containers or plastic bags.
TIN CANS
Rinse clean. Do not include aerosol cans, motor oil cans, paint cans or aluminum foil.
GLASS
Glass bottles and jars. Rinse and remove the plastic or metal lids. Do not include light bulbs, automotive, plate and beverage glass, tempered glass, mirrors or ceramics.

HOUSEHOLD NON-RECYCLABLE SOLID WASTE
BAG YOUR TRASH FOR CURBSIDE PICK-UP
Fill your trash bags as you normally would.
PURCHASE STICKERS
All non-recyclable solid waste must be bagged and have a sticker. The orange stickers cost $1.50 and are good for bags not exceeding 35lbs or 30gal. Stickers are available at Emerson Hall, the Transfer Station and The 19th Hole convenience store.
STICKER BEFORE LEAVING AT CURBSIDE
Place your trash bag with a sticker pasted in a prominent location at the curbside by 8:00 a.m. Bags without stickers will not be picked up!
OR TAKE IT TO THE TRANSFER STATION
You may also take your trash to the transfer station during its open hours. However, you will still need stickers.
OTHER SOLID WASTE
HOUSEHOLD UNIVERSAL WASTE
Charges for disposal of household universal waste will be assessed according to the fee schedule above.
LARGER ITEMS
Charges for disposal of larger items, such as appliances, tires and construction debris, will be assessed according to the fee schedule above.
ORGANIC WASTE
Clean wood and yard waste may be disposed of according to the fee schedule above.
NOT ACCEPTED
The town reserves the right to refuse waste it deems unacceptable under municipal and state statutes.
